Rotator cuff calcific tendonitis is a condition that causes pain and discomfort in the shoulder. This condition occurs when calcium deposits build up in the tendons of the rotator cuff, which are the muscles and tendons that attach the shoulder blade to the upper arm bone. Calcium buildup can cause inflammation, pain and loss of function in the shoulder.

Causes of Calcific Tendonitis

The exact cause of rotator cuff calcific tendonitis is unknown, but several factors can contribute to its development. The following are some common reasons for rotator cuff calcific tendonitis.

Overuse or Repetitive Strain

Overuse or repetitive strain is one of the most common causes of rotator cuff calcific tendonitis. This can occur in people who perform repetitive tasks that involve the shoulder, such as painting, carpentry or playing tennis. Over time, these activities can cause tiny tears in the rotator cuff tendons, leading to inflammation and the buildup of calcium deposits.

Age and Degeneration

As we age, the tendons in our rotator cuff can degenerate and become weaker. This can make them more susceptible to injury and inflammation, leading to calcific tendonitis. This condition is more common in people over the age of 40.

Genetics

Some individuals might be more genetically predisposed to developing rotator cuff calcific tendonitis. This can be due to gene variations that affect the formation and breakdown of calcium deposits in the body.

Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal imbalances can also contribute to the development of calcific tendonitis. In particular, changes in estrogen levels in women have been connected to an increased chance of developing the condition.

Trauma or Injury

Trauma or injury to the shoulder can also cause calcific tendonitis. This can occur from a fall or other accident injuring the shoulder or repetitive overhead activities that strain the rotator cuff tendons.
