Knee arthroscopy is routinely used to diagnose and repair problems within the knee joint. This is a type of surgical procedure that uses small incisions and instruments, also known as a “key hole” surgery. An arthroscope is a small tube that can be inserted into the knee joint through a tiny incision. A small camera is within the tube, sending video of the inside of the joint to a monitor. Most knee arthroscopy procedures use two or three small incisions around the knee to insert the arthroscope and small surgical instruments to perform the procedure. The orthopedic surgeon can see detailed images of the inside of the knee live on the monitor as he performs the needed repairs.
