Ankle Fracture Treatment

When you have a swollen, painful ankle after an injury, you may have suffered a fracture in one of the bones of the ankle joint. The ankle includes the tibia, fibula and talus bones that can be broken when pressure or force are placed on the joint. A broken bone in the ankle requires treatment and may need orthopedic surgery. Jonathan L. Glashow, MD orthopedic surgery and sports injury center offers ankle fracture treatment at our facility in Miami, FL.

Symptoms of an Ankle Fracture

Ankle fractures and sprains are both painful injuries and may look similar. If you have a mild fracture or severe sprain, the symptoms may be similar. When you twist or turn your ankle, it can stretch or tear ligaments, which results in a sprain. If enough force occurs to any of the bones, you may also sustain a fracture. Symptoms of a broken ankle include:

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Inability to put weight on the foot

Since sprains and fractures can occur at the same time and both cause pain and swelling, it is important to have injured ankles evaluated by a doctor. If there is a fracture, you need the right treatment to make sure the bone heals correctly and is in alignment.

Broken Ankle Treatments

Many minor fractures of the ankle bones can be treated without surgery. If the bone can be repositioned with closed reduction, most patients can heal wearing a cast or boot to keep the foot and ankle immobile. Patients will need to keep weight off the ankle as it heals, usually using crutches or a scooter for several weeks.

If a complex ankle fracture occurs, it may require surgery for repair. This can include multiple fractures, severe sprains, dislocations and other complications that need to be resolved. Dr. Glashow and his team have decades of combined experience performing complex joint surgeries to restore ankle function after a severe injury.
