ACL Injuries Surgery Treatment
The knee joint contains multiple ligaments and tendons that hold the bones and muscles together for versatile function. One of the ligaments that allow the knee to twist and turn is the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. For athletes at all levels, an ACL injury can be devastating, as it can keep you from performing and may require surgery for severe tears. At Jonathan L. Glashow, MD orthopedic surgery and sports injury center, we provide ACL injuries surgery treatment at our facility in Miami, FL.
Causes of ACL Injuries
The ACL connects the femur (thighbone) with the tibia (shinbone) and crosses in the middle of the knee joint. This band of connective tissue allows the knee to move and turn, but it can be easily stretched too far. ACL injuries are one of the most common knee injuries among athletes that perform running, turning and jumping, such as football, basketball, soccer or hockey players. Some of the actions that can cause an ACL tear or sprain include:
- Suddenly changing directions when running
- Landing poorly when coming down from a jump
- Pivoting while feet stay stationary
- Stopping too quickly when running full speed
- Direct blows to the knee
When the femur and tibia are pulled in different directions during these types of actions or events, it can stretch the ACL. In severe ACL injuries, the ligament is torn in half, resulting in very unstable and dysfunctional knee joints.
Levels of ACL Injuries
Minor ACL sprains or tears may not need surgery. The ligament can heal, and with rehabilitation the knee can be strengthened back to its former functionality. When a complete or severe tear occurs, surgery is almost always recommended to restore the stability and function of the knee joint, especially in active individuals or athletes.
