Top ACL Reconstruction Orthopedic Knee Surgeon NYC
Unfortunately, when the ACL tears it is similar to a rope snapping, and the ends of the ligament break apart. It is impossible for your orthopedic surgeon to simply stitch the torn ends of the ligament together, and reconstruction with a ligament graft is required. This surgery is called “ACL reconstruction” and is routinely performed by our Upper East Side NYC orthopedic surgeons as an arthroscopic knee surgery procedure.
We provide highly specialized, expert and up-to-date services to both our patients and our referring doctors.
If necessary, your ACL reconstruction knee surgery can be arranged with a minimum of delay. Most arthroscopic (keyhole surgery) and minimally invasive surgery can often be carried out within a day of diagnosis.
Please note: A doctor’s referral is NOT necessary from a General Practitioner to see our sports medicine or orthopedic surgery specialists for a consultation, 2nd opinion, or for treatment at our orthopedic practice – including ACL reconstruction orthopedic knee surgery.
We offer full out of network insurance benefits (we will contact your insurance company and submit for you). You will enjoy the luxury and benefit of academic medicine in a top rated concierge environment without the hassle of long hospital waiting room times and paperwork. Most policies reimburse patients for most of the cost of surgery. Our surgical coordinator will help you with a quote.
Lamarr Houston (Chicago Bears), patient of Dr. Glashow, 4 months post ACL surgery:
Diagnostic ACL reconstruction tests, treatments (including knee surgery) and your consultations can often be carried out on the same day. We offer true concierge medicine to all patients, irregardless of insurance. Our orthopedic knee surgery specialists have the ability to see our knee injury patients immediately; same day, nights and weekend and offer emergency services.
If you have been diagnosed with a torn ACL then ACL reconstruction arthroscopic surgery offers the chance of improving the stability of your knee in everyday life and for you to return to sporting activities as quickly as possible. You may be able to return to a level of sporting activities that otherwise would not be possible without undergoing this procedure.
When you meet with the ACL surgeon for your consultation you will have ample opportunities to ask any questions that you may have about your ACL reconstruction, your orthopedic surgeon discuss with you what’ll happen before, during and after the procedure and any pain you might have. Take this time with the NYC orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Glashow, MD to ensure your mind is put at ease. Dr. Glashow has been successfully performing ACL reconstruction surgery for over twenty-five years on professional athletes, dancers, teenagers, and most likely a New Yorker that you may know.
ACL reconstruction involves replacing the torn ligament, either with tissue from the hamstring muscles (semitendinosus-gracilis autograft) or sometimes with the middle third of the patella tendon (bone-patella tendon-bone autograft) – this varies from case to case.
The all inside CL reconstruction surgery procedure is performed using keyhole surgery and takes approximately one hour. “All inside” ACL reconstruction is a less invasive, more accurate way of performing ACL reconstruction. You will have three tiny small scars over your knee following the ACL reconstruction surgery.
In the large majority of cases, inside ACL reconstruction as performed by our NYC orthopedic surgeons involves:
- ACL reconstruction is carried out under a local and light general anesthesia
- The knee is examined arthroscopically to assess concomitant injuries
- A ligament graft is obtained by harvesting a section of either the hamstring tendons of the same knee (the gracilis and semitendinosus tendons) or else a portion of the patellar tendon
- Tunnels are drilled through the bones of the tibia and the femur into the knee joint.
- The tendon graft is threaded through into the knee, and the ends are fixed firmly using either specialized fixation devices which hold the graft in place under tension.
- Our NYC ACL reconstruction patients are home the same day of their surgery.
Recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction:
After your ACL reconstruction you will be given pain killers to take home, ice packs and elevation are also helpful in the first few days. It usually takes about a year to make a full recovery from ACL reconstruction but this varies between individuals and case to case, so it’s important to follow your surgeon’s advice.
