Quadriceps and Patella Tendon Knee Repair Orthopedic Knee Surgeons NYC

Quadricepts and patella tendon injuries are unfortunately a common sports injury of the knee that tends to occur in middle-aged adults. Our best in class NYC orthopedic surgeons routinely diagnosis and successfully treat these knee injuries quickly. The quadriceps tendon and patella tendon are the large tendons that connect the quadriceps (thigh muscle) to the patella (kneecap) and to the leg. Their combined function at a basic level is to allow knee extension for activity such as walking and running. When impaired, basic activities and certainly sport activities are severely compromised.

Please note: A doctor’s referral is NOT necessary from a General Practitioner to see our sports medicine or orthopedic surgery specialists for a consultation, 2nd opinion, or for treatment at our orthopedic practice –  including surgery.

Patients with patella or quadriceps or patella tendon knee injuries (such as a rupture) will most likely have a painful, swollen knee. They will have difficulty walking and cannot straighten their leg against resistance.  Seeking orthopedic medical attention quickly is advised. Ideally, orthopedic surgery should take place within four weeks after the injury.

Complete tears of the quadriceps tendon require surgical intervention to regain strength in the extremity. These tendons very rarely heal on their own, and orthopedic surgery is required to put the ends of the tendon back together. The quadricepts and patella tendon surgery is usually an outpatient procedure general  anesthesia.

The surgical treatment for a quadriceps and patellar tendon rupture involves the use of incredibly strong sutures that are tied by the orthopedic surgeon to the tendon and then passed through holes that are drilled in the bone of the kneecap.  The sutures are then tied in place to secure the location of the tendons.  This surgical procedure usually takes approximately an hour to perform.

Post-operatively, our NYC orthopedic surgeons may require you to wear a knee brace to protect the repair. Some patients may require the use of crutches, although weight can be placed on the leg as long as the knee is kept straight. Depending on your specific case, especially if you are a professional athlete, it may be recommend that you engage  early range of motion exercises- this should be performed under the supervision of a physical therapist. The knee brace can usually be discontinued after 3 months.
